About Operation Smile
Operation Smile provides free surgeries for thousands of people around the world with cleft lip and cleft palate conditions. It focuses heavily on places where most people don't have ready access to these surgeries. Cleft conditions can hamper a person's ability to speak, eat or breathe. These conditions can also cause hearing problems. People with cleft lips or palates often suffer a great deal of social stigma, leading to mental-health challenges. So after the initial surgery, patients will often need a great deal of follow-up care, from dental procedures to speech therapy. Read more at www.operationsmile.org.
The challenge: Surgery in underserved areas
Operation Smile is usually trying to fill that gap in impoverished and isolated areas. In other words, places that don't have a robust health care infrastructure. That means the organization has to set up safe, sterile conditions for surgery. Doctors also need record-keeping systems in order to provide complex treatment to thousands of patients.
When Operation Smile takes on a new patient, staff will assign them a unique identifier number. From there, they need a simple, portable way to maintain the patient's records and pull up data with the quick scan of a label.
For years, the team at Operation Smile has been searching for a label-printing solution that can meet their needs in the field. One solution the non-profit explored involved ordering patient-ID wristbands from China. This proved expensive, and the shipping added to wait times that doctors and patients don't have.

Label LIVE enables doctors to print patient labels on-site and on-demand, drawing from their patient databases, even when they don't have an internet connection. Thanks to its easy-to-use interface, smooth integration with spreadsheets, and price point, Label LIVE has quickly caught on with Operation Smile's teams around the world.
Label LIVE is an incredibly easy tool to use in creating patient labels and was extremely intuitive in generating QR codes for our patient unique identifiers.

Global Reach
Operation Smile surgeons often sit down with hospital managers and directors around the world to demonstrate Label LIVE’s intuitive, user interface. Using Operation Smile's design templates and spreadsheet data, the software allows surgeons to print high-quality labels even under difficult conditions.
Operation Smile's teams in Nicaragua, Egypt and Malawi, Rwanda, Peru and Madagascar are currently using Label LIVE. Dutton hopes to put the label software to use in all of the countries Operation Smile serves.
It's easy to train surgeons and other staff on Label LIVE. That has helped Operation Smile implement it in under-resourced environments.
Dutton recalled meeting with a hospital director in Malawi during a recent Operation Smile mission:
I sat down with him and showed him how easy Label LIVE is and explained how much cheaper it is compared to many other label software solutions, without sacrificing quality. I shared with him my Excel sheet without coding for them to generate similar labels and UIDs for all patients.
